Famous People from Texas

Texas’s rich cultural heritage and history has led to the increased popularity of a number of famous people from Texas. Actors, musicians, and a large number of historical figures have risen from the Texan soil.

Two such famous people from Texas are none other than the legendary historical figures Jim Bowie and Davy Crockett. Both of these Texan heroes were killed in the Battle of the Alamo. Bowie, a frontiersman and known for his ability to use a knife in a fight, was involved in the Texas Revolution, and fought with the Texas militia. Bowie was sick in bed when Santa Anna and his forces attacked the Alamo, and, although there are numerous conflicting reports regarding his death, it is said that Bowie died while battling Santa Anna’s troops from his bed.

Davy Crockett, the “King of the Wild Frontier,” was also a politician in addition to being a soldier and pioneer. Crockett was Tennessee’s member of the U.S. House of Representatives. While a native of Tennessee, his independence and his highly publicized distaste for fellow Congressmen makes him remarkably akin to many Texan politicians of the time. Crockett chose Texas as his new home after losing reelection to the House of Representatives. Crockett is remembered for his defense of the Alamo, the battle in which he was killed.

Texas is known for the many famous actors that hail from the state. One such actor is Patrick Swayze, the star of such films as Dirty Dancing and Ghost. The star has had much success during his career, but, unfortunately, in early 2008 Swayze was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Despite the debilitating nature of the cancer, Swayze battled the disease with chemotherapy and his health seemed to be improving. However, as of April 19, 2009, Swayze has been informed that the cancer had spread to his liver, and he may not have long to live. Regardless, his courage and his ability to continue working while undergoing treatment is a testament to the hearty nature of famous people from Texas.

Musicians of all types and genres originate from Texas, but country music is one of the most revered genres in the state. One famous person from Texas, Willie Nelson, is a national favorite and country music icon. His hits like “On the Road Again” have a timeless feel and spanned decades. The singer, songwriter, and musician has also done some acting, appearing in such films as Thief and Red Headed Stranger. He even has his own flavor of Ben & Jerry's ice cream, Willie Nelson’s Country Peach Cobbler Ice Cream.
