Don Meredith


Don Meredith was born on April 10, 1938 in Mount Vernon, Texas. His parents were Jeff and Hazel Meredith. He worked for his father at their dry goods store, Meredith’s Dry Goods, while he was growing up. When he was in high school he played both football and basketball. He played All State in both sports. After he graduated from high school he attended SMU where he played football for four years. He was elected All American twice. He always wanted to be an NFL Quarterback.

After he graduated from SMU he went on to play for the Dallas Cowboys. He joined the team in 1960 and became the quarterback in 1965. After becoming quarterback, he led the team to the playoff Bowl. They came in second, and started a long winning streak for the Cowboys. He took the team on to two NFL Championship games. He ended his career by retiring in 1969.

He received several awards during his career, and some were received later. In 1966 he received the NFL Most Valuable Player Award. He was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 1977, and later into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1982. He became a member of the Cowboys Ring of Honor in 1976 along with his former team member, Don Perkins.

In 1970 he became one of the first members of the Monday Night Football sportscasting team on ABC. He retired from sportscasting in 1984. During that time he spent three years at NBC. He has also acted in several movies and also in a few television shows. He appeared in several commercials where he was the spokesperson for Lipton Tea, Nabisco, and a few other companies.
