Molly Ivins

Molly Ivins was born on August 30, 1944 in Monterey, California, and was named Mary Tyler Ivins. When she was born her father was an officer in the navy. After he retired they moved back to Houston, Texas, where she was raised.

Molly graduated from the Columbia School of Journalism and went on to become a political writer for several different newspapers. She was also the co-author of several best selling books. “Bushwhacked” and “Shrub: The Short but Happy Political Life of George W. Bush” are two books that she authored.

She started her journalism career at the Houston Chronicle. After that she went to the Minneapolis Tribune as the first woman police reporter. There she wrote mostly about rebellious students, angry women, and a slew of other trouble makers. She then went to the Texas Observer for six years.

Her next career move took her to The New York Times where she became the Rocky Mountain bureau chief. This job required her to cover nine different states. After this she went to work for the Dallas Times for ten years and then moved on to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. In 2001, she decided to go out on her own and become an independent writer. The column she wrote was published in over 400 different publications.

One thing that she was noted for was always telling the truth. She had the ability to make people laugh at those who held influential jobs. She loved writing about politics and political figures, especially if they were from Texas. The Texas Legislature was one of her favorite subjects to write about. Molly Ivins died on January 31, 2007 of breast cancer.
