Why Texas is the Lone Star State

The original flag of the state of Texas has one gold five-point star on it that represented the 1836 flag of the Republic. Texas is nicknamed The Lone Star State because of the symbol of the one star on their flag.

The first flag had a blue background with a single gold five-point star in the middle of the blue. That style flag flew over battles until 1839 when a new Texas flag was designed to replace the original lone star flag. That new design has one horizontal stripe of white over one horizontal stripe of red. Going vertical down the side is a blue stripe with a single white five-point star in the middle of the blue. The colors used for the current Lone Star Flag are the same colors that are used for our American flag.

The original flag signified the independence of Texas from Mexico. It flew with the reminder to the state of their struggle to become independent. The blue flag was known as the National Standard of Texas. It flew from December 10, 1836 to January 25, 1839. Some people were known to believe the single star represented all the Texans making a wish for their freedom from Mexico.

Up until 1997, the actual designer of the current Lone Star Flag was unknown. It is only believed to have been designed by Dr. Charles B. Stewart because records were passed down from generation to generation that describes his original design.
