Oveta Culp Hobby


Oveta Culp Hobby was born on January 19, 1905 in Killeen, Texas. She received her law degree in 1925 from the University of Texas Law School. Culp developed an early interest in law, horses and the intricate workings of government. She was an attorney, journalist and politician. She was a member of the Democratic front.

She was successful at her occupation as an American government official and businesswoman. She held pioneering roles as the first woman to head the Women's Army Corps. Also, she was the first secretary of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. She was the second woman to hold a cabinet post. She was a responsible chairman of the board of the “Houston Post.” She served as legislative parliamentarian of the Texas House of Representatives at the age of 20. She held various positions on the newspaper and at the family-owned broadcasting company KPRC radio and KPRC-TV. Colonel Oveta Culp Hobby served as Director of the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps from 1942 to 1945 during World War II and was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal. She was also awarded the George Catlett Marshall Medal for Public Service.

Hobby had passion, style, dignity and dedication toward her work. She always upheld her ideals on social issues. She was a role model for the other woman with her impressive and successful career in the military. Her policies and example encouraged other women in pursuing careers in the military, government and business. As a service to community, she operated a medical research center for the needy and assisted the drug addicts in recovery.
