Texas is big and so is everything in Texas, including the number of sporting teams. Texas is known for their professional teams as well as amateur their ones.
The most noteworthy professional team is the Dallas Cowboys. This team has been around since the 1960s, but hasn’t always been called the Cowboys. If you remember the Dallas Steers or Dallas Rangers then you have been a fan for quite awhile. The team is known for their field play, but also for their cheerleaders. The cheerleaders were called CowBelles and Beaux in the 1960s and were high school students. Now the cheerleaders are beautiful ladies who come from all over the country. This icon of the Cowboys is as well-known as the football players themselves.
On the amateur side of Texas sports, the Longhorns are very popular. This athletic team from the University of Texas is located in Austin. The Longhorns are known for their talented teams. The football and basketball teams are most remembered for their accomplishments on the court and field. The football team has had two running backs win the most prestigious individual award possible. That award is the Heisman Trophy. Many other awards have been won by other Longhorns over their long collegiate history.
Other professional teams include the Houston Rockets, Dallas Mavericks and San Antonio Spurs in the NBA, the Dallas Stars in the NHL and the Texas Rangers and Houston Astros in the MLB.
