There are some great music stars from Texas. Some still rock, and others have passed on. Waylon Jennings was born in Littlefield, Texas and at the age of eight, he learned how to play a guitar. He would later do a duet with Willie Nelson in the 1970s. He also sang the theme song for The Dukes of Hazard. He had started his own band in high school and later became a DJ where he met Charles Hardin Holley. Charles Hardin Holley would be known to us as Buddy Holly. He was born in Lubbock, Texas and started singing at a young age. He also played piano, guitar and the fiddle. He and Jennings looked up to and were influenced by The Mayfield Brothers. Jennings played bass in Buddy Holly's band in 1959. The turning point in Holly's career was seeing Elvis Presley perform live in Texas in 1955.
Roy Orbison was born in Vernon, Texas, and he started his own band at the age of 13. He also played guitar and wrote songs. Meeting Johnny Cash was the turning point in his career. Cash advised him to meet with his recording studio where he would sing the song "Only The Lonely." ZZ Top is a group from Houston, Texas that started in 1969. They still rock on to this day. 1970 started years of constant touring throughout Texas. ZZ Top opened for the Rolling Stones in 1973 in Hawaii. This performance opened doors for them, enabling them to make their third album which sold over a million copies. Some of their songs include "Gimme All Your Lovin" and "Legs."
