Texas was first claimed by Spain in 1519, before them, native Indians lived there dating back to 10,000 B.C. It wasn't until 1682, before Spain actually inhabited the land and settled there. Spain struggled to establish colonies in Texas. When they would build a village, it would get raided by native tribes. They would have to fight against France and the United States both considered Texas to be rightfully theirs.
The Mexicans won their independence in 1821 and Texas became part of Mexico. Mexico had been at war with Spain for ten years and since the war ended, and the Spaniards were gone, Mexico moved in and claimed Texas. The Mexicans thought it would be a good idea to encourage the Americans to migrate there to help establish a community. Pretty soon the Americans out numbered the Mexicans 30,000 to 7,800. So when the Mexican government changed from a federalist model to a centralized one. That was all the Americans could stand and they started a Texas revolution. They won the battle and Texas became the Republic of Texas. Texas governed itself for the next nine years.
Texas was having military and economic problems. Couple this with the desire to protect slavery they decided to join the Confederate States of America. The Southern States had pulled out of the Union due to the Northern States desire to abolish slavery. Eventually the North won the war and the union was restored and Texas was part of the United States of America. Texas has been under the rule of six different nations.
