The Dallas Cowboys played their first game as a newly formed expansion team of the National Football League, on September 24, 1960. In the first few months after the team was formed they were called the “Steers.” That was changed a few weeks later to the “Rangers.” Unfortunately, there was a baseball team called the Rangers, so ultimately the owners decided to call the team The Cowboys.
The Cowboys played in their first Super Bowl after the 1970 season. They lost that game to the Colts. The next year the Cowboys again made it to the Super Bowl and won this game to become National Champions. The team again played in Super Bowl X, and Super Bowl XII. To date, they have five Super Bowl championships under their belts.
Coach Tom Landry led the Cowboys from 1960 until 1988, an almost unprecedented amount of time for a coach with a single team. The Cowboys have had only seven coaches during their 49 years, and are currently coached by Wad Phillips, who came on board in 2007.
Today, the Cowboys are one of the wealthiest teams in the NFL, as they generate almost $300 million in revenue every year. This fall when they take the field to play their first home game, they will be in their new stadium in Arlington, Texas, having played in Texas Stadium since 1971.
The Cowboys have been one of the most successful teams in the NFL, with 160 straight sold-out regular games. This number included post season and broke down to 79 home games and 81 on the road.
