Sam Donaldson, news anchor and reporter for ABC News, was born in El Paso, Texas in 1934. After attending college at Texas Western College, now known as UTEP, he was an artillery officer in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1959. Then he was the weekend anchor for a TV station in Washington, DC in 1966 and joined ABC News in 1971, submitting reports from Vietnam. After melanoma was removed from a lymph node in 1995, Donaldson has been a strong supporter of cancer research.

Larry McMurtry is an American novelist who was born in Wichita Falls, Texas in 1936. In 1985, he won a Pulitzer Price for his novel, “Lonesome Dove,” and in 2006, won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award for Best Screen Play for “Brokeback Mountain.” He is currently writing the screenplay for the screen adaption of his novel, “Boone’s Lick,” that he wrote in 2000.

Mary Martin was an actress from Weatherford, Texas. She was born in 1913 and won both an Emmy Award and a Tony Award for her roll in “Peter Pan.” She also won and Emmy for her rolls in “South Pacific” and “The Sound of Music.” She is the mother of actor, Larry Hagman, whose claim to fame is from TV’s “I Dream of Jeannie” and “Dallas.”

Scott Joplin was a composer and pianist born near Texarkana, Texas around 1867. He was dubbed the “King of Ragtime” for his unique compositions of ragtime music. One of his first hits was called “Maple Leaf Rag” and is still a popular piece today. His song, “The Entertainer,” was the theme song from the Academy Award winning movie, “The Sting.” He gained notoriety in 1976 when he was posthumously awarded a Pulitzer Prize for his works. He died at the young age of 48.
