Texas' Rich History

Texas is the second largest state in the United States measured by land area, second to Alaska. It ranks third in population among the fifty states.

Way back in 1519, six different countries laid claim to parts of Texas. At one point in time, Spain claimed Texas but they came under attack by warring tribes of Native Americans. The Mexican War of Independence fought in 1821, brought Texas under Mexican rule.

Oil was discovered in Texas in 1901, and this brought great changes to the fledgling state and gave its economy a much needed boost. Admitted to the union in 1845, it caused the Mexican government to break off any diplomatic relations with the US. Disputes arose between the US and Mexico over the southern border of Texas. In 1848, the border was establishes as the Rio Grande, which separated Texas from Mexico.

At one point in its colorful history, Texas had the option of dividing its land mass into five different states. However, the US Supreme Court put an end to that when they, “banned any unilateral acts of secession.”

Texas was the only state that was a republic before becoming a state. Texans are very proud of their heritage and say it is a place where you can start over. Sam Houston, who was a contributor to the building of Texas said, “One of the things that attracted people was a new degree of freedom in this new land.”

Today, Texas is a thriving state, not suffering the economic woes so many other states are dealing with right now. Texas is healthy, growing, and home to a lot of our technology giants.
