Don't Mess With Texas

There they go again. The Governor of the State of Texas, Rick Perry, was recently heard promoting a familiar theme - Texas' secession from the Union. Ever since they joined the Union in 1845, Texas has always claimed their right as a sovereign state, with preconditions in place that guarantees their right to secede from the Union at will.

Given the nation's economic problems, its understandable why there are rumblings of secession. Texans are notorious for their independence and they also have the reputation for all things large. Texas toast is normal-sized bread on steroids. Texas' economy is also very large. The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Texas, $1.08 trillion, is comparable to that of Canada, and would make it the 10th largest in the world if it was an independent nation again. Included in their GDP is Texas' oil production. The entire U.S. crude oil production is 5,064,000 barrels per day. Of that figure, Texas alone produces 1,087,000 barrels per day - about 22% of our nations production. Our consumption is 20,680,000 barrels per day. Therefore, we are precariously dependent upon other countries to make up the difference. This dependence could cause major issues for the United States.

Given the geopolitical effects of our dependence upon foreign oil, the Lonestar State's oil production is no longer a luxury for the U.S. but a matter of national security in these volatile times. Texas' answer to our recession is "drill here and drill now!"
