The United States needs Texas primarily because of the East Texas
Oil Field and because of the quantity and quality of crude oil this field is capable of producing. It just so happens that the East Texas Oil Field is the largest crude oil producing field in the U.S., outside of Alaska. It is quiet possible that the East Texas Oil Field is one of the richest crude oil producing fields in the US because it has the capability and capacity of producing enormous quantities of quality grade crude oil, regardless of where in this field you decide to drill.
During the past 75-80 years, the East Texas Oil Field has produced more than 5 billion barrels of quality grade crude oil. A portion of these 5 billion barrels of East Texas' newest commodity gave the US and its
Allies the much needed petroleum-reserve stability that they needed
to win World War II. The remaining results from a large portion of this wealth that was derived from East Texas' newfound commodity can still be seen today because it was used to produce new towns, new lifestyles, new ways of living life, and new livelihoods for thousands of East Texans.
It wasn't until after the discovery of crude oil in the East Texas Oil Field that the economy and the lifestyles of thousands of East Texans would be changed forever. Before the discovery of oil, Texas' economy was centered mainly around the railroad and it consisted of a rural, farming, and agricultural background. All this would soon change though, because of the discovery of oil in the early 20th century. It was because of oil being discovered in Texas that its economy would change from one centered around the railroad and consisting mainly of a rural,
farming, and agricultural background to one of petroleum and industrialization.
